Mushroom Grilling Tips for National Grilling Month

Brush up on your basic mushroom grilling tips

Summertime means grilling time! As you settle into summer, and National Grilling Month (July), turn to this alternative form of cooking. The heat from the grill helps enhance the meaty, umami-qualities of your favorite mushroom varieties, while also giving you added nutrients. Larger-capped mushrooms, like Portabellas and shiitakes are optimal for grilling, given their inherent hearty taste and texture.

Mushroom Grilling Tips 101

  • Lightly brush caps and stems with oil to keep them moist and season with salt and pepper.
  • Grill or broil 4 to 6 inches from heat source for 4 to 6 minutes on each side, brushing once or twice.
  • Try brushing with your favorite dressing or sauce instead of oil.

Upgrade Your Picnic Table with Mushrooms

Make ‘shroom for mushrooms at your picnic table this summer! From meaty main courses to savory sides, mushrooms’ inherent umami adds a punch of flavor to all of your favorite summertime recipes. Upgrade a classic potato salad by mixing in tender white button mushrooms, or make your burgers even better by blending your favorite mushroom variety with your favorite protein.

Did you know that mushrooms are the only non-animal food source of vitamin D? After soaking up some rays (UV-B) post-harvest, the portabella variety delivers 94% of your daily value of Vitamin D. That’s in one serving! They also are an excellent source of selenium (22%DV) and contain 9% potassium. Bonus: mushrooms are low in fat and calories – helping you maintain a healthy diet all summer long.
